If you're planning a Colorado mountain escape, summer in Idaho Springs delivers big adventure with small-town charm. Just 30 minutes from Denver- but a world away - our historic mining town is packed with outdoor fun, scenic beauty, and walkable local flavor.
1. Mountain Biking at Virginia Canyon Mountain Park (VCMP)
If you’re into flow trails, climbing routes, and unreal alpine views, Virginia Canyon Mountain Park is a must. This new trail system offers miles of singletrack for beginner to advanced riders. Expect sweeping mountain vistas, punchy climbs, and thrilling descents — located just across the street from Uplift Inn!
Pro tip: Ride in the morning before the afternoon storms roll in, then refuel in town. Be sure to visit to check trail conditions and closures: https://www.comba.org/virginiacanyonmountainpark
2. Whitewater Rafting on Clear Creek
Clear Creek runs right through town (and across the street from our motel) — and early summer is prime rafting season. Whether you're looking for family-friendly fun or heart-pumping rapids, local outfitters have trips for every level.
It’s one of the most exciting (and surprisingly accessible) whitewater experiences in Colorado.
We’re right across the street from Kodi Rafting, easy peasy! https://whitewatercolorado.com/locations/idaho-springs/
3. Stroll Miner Street
Miner Street is the heart of Idaho Springs. Spend an afternoon wandering historic storefronts, popping into quirky boutiques, sampling local coffee, and soaking in the Wild West charm. You’ll find everything from handmade goods to mountain gear to sweet treats.
It’s small-town Colorado at its best — relaxed, friendly, and walkable.
Locals tip: Check out the Brewery at Tommyknockers for some awesome food and “to-go” six packs!
4. Day Trip to Black Hawk & Central City
Just 15 minutes away, Black Hawk and Central City offer a fun and scenic change of pace. Try your luck at the casinos, explore historic buildings, or catch a show at the famous Central City Opera House. Even if gaming isn’t your thing, the drive alone — winding through mountain passes — is worth it.
5. Snowball Fight! Hike St. Mary’s Glacier
Just a short drive from town, St. Mary’s Glacier offers one of the most rewarding short hikes in the area. In summer, the trail leads to a stunning alpine lake surrounded by rugged peaks. Bring sturdy shoes and your camera — the views are classic Colorado.
Pro Tip! The only legal parking for St. Mary's Glacier Hike and trailhead are two paid parking lots. One lot is south and one is north of the trailhead. The cost is $20 per day, per vehicle. There are restroom and trash facilities at both parking lots. These are the only facilities for the hike and the St. Mary's Glacier area.
6. Relax at Indian Hot Springs
After a day of mountain biking, hiking, or rafting, nothing feels better than soaking in natural mineral water.
Indian Hot Springs has been a staple of Idaho Springs since the 1800s. The geothermal mineral waters flow from deep underground and are rich in naturally occurring minerals. You can relax in the large tropical-style mineral pool, book a private bath, or reserve a cave soak for a more intimate experience.
It’s the perfect way to unwind sore legs and reset before another day of adventure. Pro tip: Go in the evening when it’s quieter and more relaxing. Open till 9pm or later!
7. Tour the ARGO Mill & Tunnel
Calling all history buffs! Idaho Springs was founded on gold! At its peak, this was the largest mill of its kind in the world, and you can still experience it firsthand at the ARGO Mill & Tunnel.
During the Colorado Gold Rush, our local mining districts were known as “The Richest Square Mile on Earth”. The Argo played an integral part in this story. Construction of the Argo Tunnel began in 1893 and lasted 10 years until it reached Central City 4.2 miles away.
Today, guided tours take you through the mill, into parts of the tunnel system, and explain how gold was extracted in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
You can even try your hand at gold panning afterward — a surprisingly fun experience for both kids and adults.
It’s educational, immersive, and a great way to understand the roots of this mountain town. Walkable from the Uplift Inn. Visit https://argomilltour.com/ for hours.
